Today was a very warm day but it didn't stop me from enjoying a day full of color! I signed up to take an online class on dyeing cotton at Quilt University. This is my first experience with online classes and after today, I think I'm going to like it.
I've done some dyeing on my own and took a class at the LQS as well. So far, I'm still learning and experimenting but hope to gain enough knowledge to be able to dye any color under the sun! Our first lesson was creating solid colors using the vat dyeing technique.

I used the three primary colors and totally immersed a FQ in each color. Initially, the fabric appeared on the pale side but after adding the plain salt and the soda ash...WOW...the colors really began to appear. Once these steps were done, it was sit and wait. In one hour's time, however, I had to stir about 10 times. So much for sitting and waiting!

I'm not a real patient person and that hour of waiting seemed like forever! Finally it was time to rinse, wash, and dry the fabrics. I was very pleased with the first 3 bright FQs. Our next project was to take the leftover dyes, add another FQ to each color and watch some really pretty pastels emerge.

Our final exercise was to combine the 3 colors in one bucket, drop a FQ in and watch the mystery color appear. Because I'd experimented before with the dyes, I knew it would be a brown shade. The result ended up being a lovely skin tone.

Next week is our session on low-immersion dyeing where we will be creating some lovely, mottled fabrics! Stay tuned for another dose of color next week.
